Youssef Salem a grandi dans un quartier à Port-de-Bouc avec un père pointilleux sur l’orthographe et fan des grands héros de l’histoire arabes, plus particulièrement venant d’Algérie. Quoi que le nom du pays a été inventé en 1837 pour désigner l’appellation « possessions françaises du Nord de l’Afrique ». Qu’importe ! Il a grandi avec deux sœurs et un frère. Une mère aimante, mais restant à sa place dans le sens de la famille maghrébine. Le poids de la religion et la montée de l’intolérance en France des années 80’, font du petit Youssef une emprise victimaire. Une tranche de vie qui semble ordinaire, mais qui fait de lui l’envie de coucher ses rêves, ses fantasmes sur une feuille blanche. A 45 ans, son premier roman « Choc Toxique » est accepté chez une éditrice indépendante. L’ennui c’est que le récit est semble-t-il autobiographique mais avec une astuce dont à le secret l’écrivain : inventé une seconde vie à ses personnages de sa famille. Vont-ils apprécier cette caricature poussée au déshonneur ?

«Youssef Salem a du succès » sur le ton de la comédie met en inventaire tous les complexes, les clichés identitaires d’une famille arabe. C’est l’angle du récit qu’impose la réalisatrice Baya Kasmi. Autant on passe un très bon moment à suivre les angoisses existentielles, non dénuées d’humour de l’auteur, jusqu’à sa célébration au plus haut titre d’un grand prix littéraire. Après, ça se gâte ! Une critique convenu du monde littéraire, ne fera en rien pour finaliser le récit avec une porte de sortie invraisemblable pour que Youssef retrouve une sérénité au sein de sa famille. Ramzy Bedia est crédible dans son rôle d’écrivain tourmenté, même si l’exagération est poussée à l’absurde. C’est la fin du scénario qui déçoit.

Youssef Salem grew up in a neighborhood in Port-de-Bouc with a father who was picky about spelling and a fan of the great heroes of Arab history, especially from Algeria. Although the name of the country was invented in 1837 to designate the name "French possessions of North Africa". What does it matter! He grew up with two sisters and a brother. A loving mother, but remaining in her place in the sense of the North African family. The weight of religion and the rise of intolerance in France in the 80s made little Youssef a victim. A slice of life that seems ordinary, but that makes him want to put his dreams, his fantasies down on a blank sheet. At 45, his first novel “Toxic Shock” was accepted by an independent publisher. The trouble is that the story is apparently autobiographical but with a trick of which the writer has the secret: invented a second life for his characters from his family. Will they appreciate this caricature pushed to dishonor?

"Youssef Salem is successful" in the tone of comedy lists all the complexes, the identity clichés of an Arab family. This is the angle of the story imposed by director Baya Kasmi. As much as we spend a very good time following the existential anxieties, not devoid of humor of the author, until his celebration at the highest level of a great literary prize. Afterwards, it goes bad! An agreed criticism of the literary world, will do nothing to finalize the story with an unlikely way out for Youssef to find serenity within his family. Ramzy Bedia is credible in his role as a tormented writer, even if the exaggeration is pushed to the absurd. It is the end of the scenario that disappoints.
